North Tolsta and Beyond...

North Tolsta is a place of wild and rugged natural beauty.  There are several fantastic beaches to enjoy, all of which are within 2 miles of Remuera.

The most famous of these is the Tràigh Mhòr ('Big Beach') which is one of the longest beaches in Lewis.  The Tràigh Mhòr is a magnificent stretch of clean golden sands and is perfect for families who wish to enjoy walking, sunbathing, swimming and surfing.

As well as the 'Big Beach', there is also Garry Beach, with its tall stone stacks, and the Cladach, where rock pools can be explored beside Tolsta Pier.  In addition to these beaches, there are also one or two lesser known wee gems which await those who are willing to venture further off-road.

Other things to do in the village include exploring the Tolsta Head Coastal Walk, with its impressive cliffs, and a visit to Lord Leverhulme's Bridge to Nowhere, an abandoned attempt to build a road between Tolsta and Ness   Beyond the end of the old road lies the Heritage Trail from Tolsta to Port of Ness: a 10 mile (often boggy!) moorland walk which includes spectacular views and passes the dramatic ruins of Filiscleitir Chapel.

The moor beyond Lord Leverhulme's bridge is also a wonderful place for anglers, with dozens of lochs containing wild brown trout, all available to explore for free.

The village has an excellent community shop and Post Office, less than 1 mile from Remuera, which stocks all the essential groceries, souvenirs, postcards and toys.  There is also a well-stocked shop, filling station, pharmacy and take-away café at the nearby village of Back, approximately 6 miles from the house.

The island's main town of Stornoway is approximately 12 miles away and has many facilities, including shops, cafes, restaurants, sports centre and golf course.

North Tolsta is a convenient base for enjoying all the things to see and do in the rest of Lewis and Harris. These include:

  • Callanish Standing Stones
  • Garenin Blackhouse Village
  • Bosta Iron Age House
  • Stornoway Castle Grounds, including Lews Castle and Museum nan Eilean
  • Spectacular Harris beaches such as Luskentyre and Husinish
